AmaWaterways Ships and Itineraries 2024, 2025, 2026

AmaSiena joins AmaWaterways’ legacy of upscale yet relaxed river cruises that cater to more active couples or mature multi-gen groups. The ship primarily sails the Rhine River through Western Europe, whisking guests to fairytale-esque towns and historic cities. As with most river cruises, onboard activities are limited, as the focus is on excursions.

The ship also has four restaurants, an expanded wellness facility and a water sports platform. Due to its size, it can only sail on the Danube; itineraries in 2019 will focus on the Upper Danube, with the Lower Danube added in 2020. With a fleet of bicycles on board, guests have the opportunity to explore Europe on our guided bike tours, or go discover on their own.

AmaWaterways vs. Viking River Cruises

With B2Bs travelers can combine multiple itineraries and save 10% on the 2nd or 3rd cruise. Another option is to add on a land package before/after the cruise to extend the vacation. In July 2021 AmaWaterways signed a partnership deal with Metropolitan Touring (Galapagos and South America travel company) for a new program of Magdalena River cruises in Colombia. The unique itinerary program was scheduled to start in December 2023, with a newbuild riverboat owned by Metropolitan Touring and operated by AMA under a long-term charter. This CruiseMapper page reviews all APT River Cruises ships operated by the sisterbrands (APT's subsidiary companies) AMAwaterways (amawaterways.com) and TravelMarvel (travelmarvel.com.au). APT (Australian Pacific Touring) is either the shipowner or charterer of the riverboats.

Your cruise fare on both will include at least one shore excursion in each port; wine, beer and soda at lunch and dinner; all onboard meals; Wi-Fi; and cultural enrichment. AmaWaterways suggests 100 euros per person per seven-night cruise (120 euros on AmaMagna), with an additional 25 euros per week-long sailing for the cruise manager. On European itineraries Viking recommends 18 euros per person per day, which can be prepurchased or automatically added to the shipboard account.

Choose AmaWaterways if you want a pool.

We have AMAwaterways and TravelMarvel ships schedules (fleet's sail calendars with port dates and times of arrival/departure) and also the boat's cruise tracker that shows on a map the vessel's current position (location now). AmaWaterways offers terrific value-for-money extras on its cruises; these include free and unlimited Wi-Fi (with an unusually fast connection for a cruise ship) and complimentary beer, wine and sodas at lunch and dinner. While the quality of food is subjective, both AmaWaterways and Avalon make sure that cruise passengers have a wide variety of dishes, both familiar and local to the region, at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Both cruise lines serve buffets at breakfast and lunch, as well as a selection of made-to-order items.

There are fitness classes (during COVID times, these were provided outdoors, weather permitting, rather than in the fitness center), massages and beauty treatments in the one-room spa and salon, a small pool, and an outdoor giant chess set. Otherwise, you’ll have plenty of time for peaceful contemplation in the lounge. There’s usually a musical performance after dinner in the lounge in the evenings. These Piano Deck cabins with fixed windows are the smallest onboard at just 160 square feet. If you don’t plan on spending much time in your room, these categories will do just fine, but be forewarned—part of the fun of the Rhine itineraries is sitting outside watching the castles and locks go by.

Avalon's bathrooms also seem larger, due to the cabin's configuration at a slight angle (to give cruisers that river view mentioned earlier). The fairytale Rhine River is renowned for its UNESCO-designated Rhine Gorge, where more than 40 historic castles line the riverbanks. The following YouTube video provides a review of the experience on AMA river cruises in Europe. AmaLucia's 7-night "The Captivating Rhine & Enchanting Rhine" itineraries are between Amsterdam Netherlands and Basel Switzerland, starting February 11th, 2024. Pre-/post-cruise land packages are offered in Zurich, Lake Lucerne, and Amsterdam.

The ships even have a "gluten-free corner," where passengers can find snacks at all hours of the day. Viking River Cruises and AmaWaterways include at least one shore excursion in every port you visit. Excursions are typically guided by local experts who know the port's culture and history well and speak English almost perfectly. These excursions generally are limited to small groups and take you into smaller venues or provide immersive experiences that expose passengers to a port's culture and tradition on a deeper, often hands-on, level.

AmaViola and AmaStella also feature a number of connecting cabins, designed with families in mind. You might go truffle hunting in Bordeaux or cognac blending in Camus, for example. Because they have French balconies instead of outdoor space, the 200-square-foot Panorama cabins on Avalon's Suite Ships feel bigger and roomier than most river cruise cabins.

Select sailings on the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine and Garonne include longer bike rides to -- and even between -- ports. Backroads even provides the high-end bikes for these sailings, set up for each person ahead of time based on factors like height, weight and cycling style. Avalon has added Adventure Hosts in 2019, while AmaWaterways offers its own Wellness Hosts.

Then travel to France’s legendary wine capital, Bordeaux, where your cruise begins. Iconic châteaux, timeless vineyards and delicious wine tastings are plentiful as you visit Libourne, Blaye, Bourg, Pauillac and Cadillac. Following the cruise, enjoy two nights to experience the lure of the UNESCO-designated Loire Valley, where Leonardo da Vinci lived and is buried. This trip is a must for anyone interested in the best of French culture, lifestyle, wine and food. It serves an ever-changing menu inspired mainly by local cuisine—think semmelknödel, or bread dumplings, while sailing through Germany might be paired with a local beer or wine. Because of COVID-19, tables were assigned, though it’s open seating in standard times.

Experience the allure of France’s Alsace region in its welcoming capital, Strasbourg, and its priceless gem, Riquewihr. Then there is Breisach, rising above the vineyards of the Rhine, and Freiburg, one of Germany’s sunniest cities and gateway to Black Forest. Fabled towns lost in time present you with the chance to taste local flavors—Rüdesheimer coffee and Kölsch beer—and to touch history up close with guided hikes and bike rides. From Amsterdam’s colorful canals to the majestic Swiss Alps, journey into the heart of the destinations you visit.
