For most of our clients who largely live paycheck to paycheck, an unexpectedly high bill or an unforeseen expense is both extremely stressful and damaging. In worse cast scenarios, if they aren’t able to cover these expenses, they may be forced to leave safe housing and return to their abusers. For example, we host a regular Art Therapy Group facilitated by Restoring Ivy Collective, open to both our child and adult clients. Often lacking the ability to constructively express their feelings, children who have experienced trauma and witnessed violence may exhibit negative or aggressive behavior at school and at home. Exposure to this type of violence is also the greatest indicator that a child will grow up to find himself or herself in a violent relationship – as either the abuser or abused.

Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie railed on House Speaker Mike Johnson and his handling of the foreign aid bills, despite deciding not to move to oust the speaker Saturday. “When faced with the question of whether to provide offensive aid to further this conflict, we believe there is a moral imperative to find another path," the statement said. The statement also called for a ceasefire in Gaza, more humanitarian aid to be delivered, and peace talks to begin. Nineteen members of the House Progressive Caucus who voted against further aid to Israel said Saturday that “we make ourselves complicit in this tragedy” if Congress continues to supply military assistance amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
DASH Goals
We are addressing this crisis by launching a Safe Nights Fund to safely house families with a hotel stay and support services. DASH is the only agency with a flexible funding program, the Survivor Resilience Fund, that allows us to quickly offer support – such as the Safe Nights support – for whatever survivors need to prevent homelessness and keep them safe. The lack of these immediately accessible funds at other programs has led to some survivors falling through cracks in the local safety net at the cost of their lives. Other sources of hotel vouchers can take days to access; such delays are retraumatizing for survivors in danger. Residents at Sanctuary Plus receive clinical case-management, art therapy, trauma informed care, and referrals to supportive services focused on addressing the unique challenges each family or individual faces.

As DC’s largest provider of safe housing for survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their families, DASH finds innovative solutions to the up-to-the-minute challenges in our region. Emergency shelters are chronically full due to COVID-19, forcing families to choose between homelessness or staying in a violent home. Eradicating domestic violence requires a coordinated community response that embraces both prevention and intervention.

The House on Saturday passed a key package that provides aid to Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific region, while also addressing GOP legislative priorities, such as sanctions on Iran and a potential ban on TikTok. Senators could try to strip out the TikTok legislation, but policy analysts view it as unlikely, as quickly approving the foreign aid is a top congressional priority. Membership perks include monthly happenings like CEO-led workshops, rare whisky tastings, panel discussions, live music, and invites to offsite sporting and cultural events.
